Denial and AcceptanceI was scared - terrified - of the truth. I did not want to be the outcast. I was afraid of what was to come. I could not be different. It wasn't a simple denial - it was my fact. Not just emotions getting in the way - it was everything to me; meant everything to me.

Everytime i caught myself watching - staring, even - i would punish myself. I felt dirty and defiled. I felt there simply had to be something wrong with me. And something must be done about it.

I felt it was a choice. Maybe i was desperate. A choice of the mind to get rid of the helpless desperation. But how could i let it get to that point? Was i really so out of control of my

I know how hard it is to be a queer child, youth, or adult.
I grew up in America, in the South, where my self-expression,
my self-identity, is legally allowed, but socially discouraged.
I grew up in an environment where being different is demonized,
where queers are vilified and declared "ill," or "deceived."
When I was a teenager in Memphis, Duanna Johnson,
a transwoman, was shot to death. I remember watching
the news with a sort of numb horror.
I remember discovering that not only are members of
the transgender, gay, and lesbian communities abused
and killed by others, but that individuals from these
communities sometimes take their own lives.
While staying in the closet largely protected me from
direct bullying, it was very affecting to be constantly,
indirectly exposed to hate, to prejudice.

When gay kids get depressed and take their lives each day.

These haters bag on gay kids and make them feel like shit,
Haters tell gays to give up on life and quit.

Girls liking girls and guys liking guys,
